Mark Grattan

Mark Grattan, born in Hudson, Ohio, is a multi-disciplinary designer with two decades of skilled wood craftsmanship. A New Yorker by base, he has spent much of the last several years living and working abroad, a restless rhythm that shapes the bold, cross-cultural sensibility of his practice. His work is a dialogue between color and texture, rooted in instinctive inspirations drawn from Italian design and the furniture that furnished Black living rooms long before the design world took notice. Grattan does not design from a distance. He is a fierce advocate for the maker and for the idea that design without craft is just a render.

A Pratt Institute–trained designer, Grattan builds with his own hands — an increasingly rare discipline in a field that has largely moved on from it. His work has been represented by Cristina Grajales Gallery, Superhouse, and UNNO Galería, and a devoted following has grown across the worlds of music, art, and culture. He won Ellen’s Next Great Designer in 2021. Two covers of Elle Decor and a May 2026 cover of Architectural Digest, shot in his New York apartment. His textile debut, Layered, was named Hospitality Textile of the Year by Interior Design in 2025, and his work lives in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
